The Euphemian Literary Society Hall is a striking Neoclassical icon on Erskine’s campus—its Ionic-columned portico, T-shaped plan, and meticulously crafted brickwork convey classical revival elegance. More than an architectural gem, it stands as a living monument to nearly 185 years of academic tradition and debate.

Built in 1912 in a Neoclassical style on West Main Street in the Erskine College Quadrangle. It’s a single-story, T‑shaped brick building with a hipped tin roof, listed as a contributing structure in the Erskine‑Due West Historic District on the National Register (1982).

The hall provided an independent meeting space for literary and oratorical practice—central to the college’s academic life since the mid-19th century. It shows continuity in campus culture: it was built to replace an earlier hexagonal hall (1858), dedicated in 1913, and renovated in 1976, remaining in use. The Euphemian Literary Society,Erskine’s oldest student organization (founded 1839), occupies the hall. The society is chartered by the SC legislature and remains active today.
