Skelton Career Center, a leader in career and technological education, will prepare students to reach their maximum potential by providing a quality education emphasizing high achievement in a caring and safe environment. Telephone number: 864-855-8195. In 1964, Ray Duncan and Steward Baylor formulated the idea to teach all of the CTE courses in the county in one location to reduce the duplication of programs and maximize the use of the expensive equipment needed in the instruction of these classes. Dr. Baylor located 135 acres that could be purchased and the present center is built on this property located almost in the center of three of the high schools.
1n 1966 the Pickens County Area Vocational Education Center was opened with 6 programs. There were 8 teachers and Robert Turpin was the first director. This center was the first in the state and became the model for other centers around the state.
Additions were made to the first building to house more programs and another building was built in 1974 for 6 more programs.
Many changes have occurred in the program offerings and in the curriculum within the programs. We are teaching skills for today and skills for tomorrow. Our students are taught to be life long learners. This new facility will enhance our mission : To prepare students to reach their maximum potential by providing a quality education emphasizing high achievement in a caring and safe environment.
