William Mayes House
The William Mayes House, constructed circa 1910, is a distinguished example of Neoclassical architecture located at 1915 Harrington Street in Newberry, South Carolina. This two-story, stucco-clad residence features a prominent double-tiered portico with a pediment adorned with modillions and a semi-circular vent, supported by triple Tuscan columns. The first-tier porch wraps around the front, while the second-tier porch is accessed via a Venetian door. The main entrance is framed by sidelights and an elliptical transom, enhancing its classical appeal.
Situated within the Harrington Street Historic District, the William Mayes House contributes to the district’s representation of architectural styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Victorian, Neoclassical, and vernacular forms. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 26, 1980.
While the house is a private residence, its architectural significance makes it a notable landmark in Newberry’s historic district.
