Whitehall house

The Whitehall house in Greenville, South Carolina, is a historic residence built in 1813 by Henry Middleton, a prominent Charlestonian and former governor of South Carolina. Designed as a summer retreat, it was constructed on land purchased from Elias T. Earle, a notable settler in the area. Whitehall is recognized for its Barbadian architectural style, featuring a simple white frame structure with shuttered windows and wide first and second-story galleries, or piazzas.

The property originally encompassed a 1,000-acre plantation along Richland Creek. In 1820, Middleton sold the estate to George Washington Earle, Elias Earle’s son-in-law. The Earle family maintained ownership for several generations, with Charles Stone, Eugenia Earle’s husband, inheriting the home in 1840. The residence remained in the Earle and Stone families for many years.

Whitehall was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 5, 1969, acknowledging its architectural and historical significance. It is situated within the Colonel Elias Earle Historic District, which was listed on the National Register in 1982, highlighting the area’s historical importance.

Today, Whitehall stands as one of Greenville’s oldest residences, reflecting the city’s rich history and architectural heritage.
