Webb-Coleman House
The Webb-Coleman House, also known as Christian’s Post Office, is a historic residence located near Chappells, South Carolina, in Saluda County. Built between 1800 and 1825, this Federal-style farmhouse is a significant example of early 19th-century architecture in the Upcountry region. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 24, 1992.
The Webb-Coleman House is a two-and-a-half-story, five-bay, gable-roofed frame structure sheathed in weatherboard. In the mid-19th century, a one-story, full-length, shed-roofed wing was added. In 1915, a one-story, gable-roofed ell and a shed-roofed porch were attached to the north elevation of the ell. Further renovations in 1934 included the addition of a bathroom, rebuilding the chimneys, and altering the front door. The property also includes several contributing outbuildings, such as a mid-to-late-19th-century cotton house, an early-20th-century garage, an early 1930s dollhouse, and an early-20th-century tenant house.
The house is situated approximately 2 miles south of Chappells, 0.3 miles east of South Carolina Highway 39, at the junction of three rural dirt roads. This location was once a crossroads for colonial roads, contributing to its historical significance.
