W.L. Hill Store

The W.L. Hill Store in Sharon, South Carolina, is a historic three-story department store built around 1913. Designed by architect Julian Starr, it stands as the largest building in the town, reflecting the grandeur of urban department stores of the early 20th century. The store was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 20, 1995, and is a contributing property to the Hill Complex Historic District.

Constructed in the Commercial style, the building features a prominent brick façade with large display windows on the ground floor, designed to attract customers from the surrounding rural areas. The interior boasts solid oak floors and a grand cherry staircase that ascends to the upper levels, which housed various departments catering to the needs of the local community.

W.L. Hill, a prominent local merchant, stocked a wide range of goods, including dry goods, groceries, meat, shoes, and millinery items. The first floor featured departments for groceries and dry goods, while the second floor offered hardware and farm implements. The third floor was dedicated to buggies and wagons. Hill also operated a bank and a local telephone exchange within the building, serving as a central hub for the community.

The W.L. Hill Store is located at 3034 York Street, Sharon, SC 29742. Its imposing structure makes it a notable landmark in the town, reflecting the entrepreneurial spirit and community focus of its founder, W.L. Hill.
