Tigerville General Store

Tigerville General Store stands at 7850 North Tigerville Road, just across from the campus of North Greenville University, in the rural‑town community of Tigerville. The building occupies a prominent position at a crossroads that has long functioned as a social and commercial hub for the surrounding Upstate farmland and mill‑town region. Its setting — along a gently traveled rural thoroughfare, with adjacent open land and mature trees — evokes the traditional small‑town character of late nineteenth‑ and early twentieth‑century Greenville County.

The core of the store dates to 1864, when the original structure was built by an early resident, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings associated with Tigerville’s early commercial history. Over subsequent decades, the building was expanded and modified — most notably under the ownership of the Wood family — yet it retains much of its historic character. The structure is a wood‑frame general store, clad in weatherboard siding and capped by a gabled roof, typical of rural general‑store construction.

The design is straightforward and utilitarian, in keeping with the store’s function as a commercial and community gathering place rather than a formal architectural showpiece. A broad front porch once served as a sheltered gathering area for patrons to sit, converse, and await deliveries — a commonplace feature of nineteenth‑century country stores in the South. Windows and doors are arranged to facilitate easy flow of people and goods; large display windows and double-entry doors opened onto the front porch or street, enabling both retail trade and social interaction.

Inside, the store preserved the traditional single-room or open‑plan layout typical of rural general stores: a central sales and merchandise area, with shelving, counters, and display space for grocery items, hardware, dry goods, and later, consumer items; and, in earlier decades, a pot-bellied stove providing warmth in winter, giving the space a homey, communal atmosphere. As recollected by former patrons, the warmth of the store came as much from friendship and conversation as from the heat of the stove.

In its later years, the building also accommodated the local post office — the first post office in Tigerville was established in this store in 1881. Additionally, the second floor once housed a Masonic lodge, indicating the building’s role as a civic as well as commercial center. Thus, despite modest materials and vernacular construction, the Tigerville General Store combines the attributes of a rural commercial building, a civic gathering place, and a communications hub — functions reflected in its architecture and evolving layout over time.

Tigerville General Store is significant as a focal point of community life in Tigerville and northern Greenville County from the mid‑19th century onward. The store began under the proprietorship of Lemuel I. Jennings, who founded the first post office there in 1881, making the building the birthplace of the community’s formal postal services and a hub for communication, news, and commerce.

Later, under the ownership of the Wood family (beginning with John T. Wood and then Thornton Pralo Wood), and for much of the twentieth century, the store became known as T.P. Wood’s Store — a stable, multi‑generation family business that served not only as a retail outlet but also a social and civic center. Over decades, neighbors, travelers, students of nearby North

When the store closed in 1996, it marked the end of over a century of continuous operation. Fortunately, the building’s historical and symbolic value was recognized: in the 21st century it was acquired by North Greenville University, restored, and reopened as Tigerville General Store (and later as Wood’s General Store) — reactivating its long‑standing function as a community‑serving retail and social space, albeit in a new context.
