The Oaks Plantation
The Oaks is a historic plantation house located near Winnsboro in Fairfield County, South Carolina. Constructed around 1850 by Richard A.R. Hallum, the residence exemplifies antebellum architecture with its two-story, weatherboarded frame structure and gable-end roof. A notable feature is its central, two-tiered pedimented portico, supported by four wooden columns and adorned with a fanlight and boxed cornice.
In 1856, John Montgomery Lemmon acquired the property for $10,000. By 1860, Lemmon, a moderately wealthy planter, owned 19 enslaved individuals and managed a plantation spanning approximately 1,000 acres. During the Civil War, in February 1865, Union soldiers looted The Oaks, seizing food, livestock, and valuables; however, the house itself was not destroyed.
The Lemmon family maintained ownership of The Oaks until the 1980s. Recognizing its historical and architectural significance, the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 6, 1984.
