The Little White House ca 1925

The Little White House, constructed circa 1925 (and documented as standing before 1927), is a contributing residence located at 231 Florence Street SW in Aiken, South Carolina. Built for Mrs. Eleanor (Fowler) Winans, the house reflects the continued residential development of Aiken’s prestigious Winter Colony during the 1920s, when affluent seasonal visitors from the Northeast expanded the city’s reputation as one of the nation’s foremost winter sporting resorts. Situated within a neighborhood of elegant cottages and estates, the residence illustrates the demand for comfortable yet architecturally refined homes that complemented the surrounding Winter Colony landscape.

Architecturally, The Little White House is a modest yet well-executed frame dwelling that exhibits characteristics of the Colonial Revival style popular during the early twentieth century. The one-story weatherboard residence features a balanced main façade accented by a projecting gabled wing, grouped windows, boxed eaves with cornice returns, brick chimneys, and a welcoming front porch supported by chamfered wood posts. An original paneled entrance with sidelights reinforces the home’s traditional design, while its restrained ornamentation reflects the understated elegance favored for many of Aiken’s smaller Winter Colony residences. Although minor alterations, including replacement windows and a rear shed addition, have occurred over time, the house retains the architectural character that contributes to the historic district.

The Little White House is significant as a contributing resource within the Aiken Winter Colony Historic District III, where it represents the residential growth that accompanied Aiken’s emergence as a nationally recognized center for polo, fox hunting, horse racing, and other equestrian pursuits during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Together with neighboring cottages, estates, and supporting buildings, the property contributes to the distinctive architectural fabric and cultural landscape established by the city’s influential winter residents. Today, The Little White House remains an important reminder of Aiken’s enduring heritage as the “Sporting Capital of the South” and of the carefully planned neighborhoods that defined the Winter Colony era.
