Sylvania

Nestled off SC Highway 10, Sylvania is a finely preserved Federal-style residence built around 1825, likely by John Hearst—great-uncle to the famed newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Its name, meaning “woodland place,” reflects its setting amid ancient Long Cane forestlands.

The elegant 1½‑story clapboard home rests on a low brick foundation with corbeled, double exterior chimneys anchoring each gable end. A central dormer punctuates both the front and rear façades, while boxed cornice returns and cypress-shingled gable roof lend distinction to its architecture. Its Regency-inspired interior includes gracefully marbleized woodwork and refined Federal details that set it apart in McCormick County.

Ownership transitioned to the Wideman family around 1847, when James H. Wideman acquired the property. In the 20th century, Frank Wideman Sr., appointed by President Roosevelt as Assistant U.S. Attorney General, passed it on to Frank Wideman Jr., who executed a sensitive restoration between 1969 and 1971—preserving its historic character faithfully.

With its architectural elegance and deep family lineage, Sylvania earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places on November 28, 1977. Spanning approximately 12.8 acres, this historic landmark remains cherished by its successive stewards—including the current owners who maintain its legacy of preservation since 2020.
