Sullivan–King Mortuary

The Sullivan–King Mortuary is a one-story, masonry commercial building constructed in the mid-twentieth century to serve as a professional mortuary and funeral home within its urban context. The structure exhibits modest Streamline Moderne and mid-century commercial architectural influences, with an emphasis on horizontal lines, smooth surfaces, and functional design elements typical of postwar professional buildings.

The building is rectangular in plan and constructed of load-bearing brick masonry, finished with stucco in selected areas to provide a smooth façade. The principal façade is asymmetrically composed, with a recessed entryway flanked by large fixed-pane display windows set in metal frames. The entry is sheltered beneath a flat concrete canopy, supported by brick piers, and accented with subtle cast-stone trim. Fenestration along the front and side elevations includes ribbon windows and clerestory openings, designed to maximize natural light in interior administrative and service spaces.

The roof is flat and concealed behind a low parapet, with historic coping materials of cast-stone or concrete. Interior framing consists of dimensional lumber partitions and roof joists, with steel reinforcements integrated during construction to support mechanical systems and roof loads. Interior spaces historically included a reception area, embalming rooms, chapel/ceremonial spaces, and administrative offices, organized to provide efficient circulation while accommodating privacy for family and staff. Original interior finishes included plaster walls, acoustic tile ceilings, and early terrazzo or linoleum flooring, with wood trim accents around doors and windows.

Rear and side elevations incorporate secondary service entrances, loading areas, and small utility additions, compatible in scale and materials with the main block. Original mechanical and plumbing systems have been updated over time, but careful attention has maintained the building’s spatial integrity and functional layout.
