Stradley and Barr Dry Goods Store

The Stradley and Barr Dry Goods Store at 14 South Main Street in Greenville stands as a dignified chapter of the city’s post‑Civil War mercantile heritage—a striking three‐story Romanesque Revival structure built circa 1898, whose enduring architecture and social significance echo a bustling era of textile economy and storefront vibrancy.

Founded in the early 1880s when George T. Barr and C. D. Stradley acquired and revitalized a dry goods business, the store emerged during a flourishing period when downtown Greenville hosted dozens of independent fabric and notions shops. The partners quickly gained reputation by purchasing supplies with cash, operating lean, and offering quality goods to an eager community. As they expanded, the duo purchased adjacent land and in 1898 unveiled their new brick emporium, spending roughly $11,000—an investment considered “the acme of beauty” at the time. The store’s façade is a textbook example of Romanesque Revival commercial design:

  • Deeply recessed elongated windows framed by granite flat arches on the second floor and rounded ashlar arches above. Decorative stone belt courses, Doric columns, and inset arches beneath a dentil‐lined parapet imbue the exterior with visual rhythm.
  • Atop the building sits the original flagstaff and masonry parapet—signature elements still preserved.
  • Inside, pressed‐metal ceilings soar over 12 ft, turned wooden columns support open floors, and hardwood floors remain in their historic configurations.

Following a modern renovation in 2005, portions of the building—including a rooftop terrace—were subtly adapted while carefully retaining its historic integrity.

Stradley and Barr Dry Goods Store thrived as one of Greenville’s premier retail outlets in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their famous newspaper ad quipped: “The Maine has blown up, but not our prices”—a nod to sharp marketing around the era’s Spanish‑American War.

In 1919, the building transitioned to Efird’s Department Store, marking a shift in retail patterns downtown. Efird’s occupied the space until the 1950s. Following suburban migration and economic changes, the storefront was altered, painted over, and repurposed—eventually becoming offices and planned for mixed‐use redevelopment.

On June 24, 2008, the structure was formally listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing both its architectural distinction and its role in South Main Street’s commercial growth.

The Stradley and Barr Dry Goods Store is far more than a brick building—it’s a milestone in Greenville’s economic and architectural memory. Born from Reconstruction-era entrepreneurship, elevated into a Romanesque Revival landmark, and later home to one of the South’s major retailers, it now offers a tangible connection to a time when South Main bustled with fabric bolts, tailored fittings, and the foot traffic of a growing city. Its careful preservation ensures that the textures and stories of Greenville’s mercantile past remain vivid today.
