Siloam School ca 1936

Siloam School, constructed circa 1936 on Congaree Road near Eastover, is a well-preserved example of a rural African American school built during the New Deal era. The simple one-story, two-room frame building stands on brick piers and is clad in shiplap weatherboard siding beneath a gabled metal roof. A recessed porch supported by square wooden posts shelters the principal entrance, while two interior brick flues reflect the building’s original heating system. The modest design and functional plan are characteristic of rural school buildings approved by the South Carolina State Board of Education during the early twentieth century.

Built with funds provided through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Siloam School replaced an earlier school building dating to about 1920 and served rural African American children in the Eastover area until its closure in 1956. The school was part of the segregated public education system of the period and represents the efforts of local communities to establish permanent educational facilities despite limited resources. After closing, the building was acquired by Siloam Baptist Church, which has maintained the historic structure. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, the school is significant for its association with the development of African American education in South Carolina and as a surviving example of a rural schoolhouse of the 1930s.
