Sandy Springs United Methodist Church
Sandy Springs United Methodist Church in Laurens County, South Carolina, is a historic congregation with deep roots in the community.
Early Beginnings: The church’s origins trace back to the early 1800s when settlers, primarily Methodists, established the community near a spring surrounded by white sand, giving the area its name, “Sandy Springs.” In 1828, a 15-acre site was purchased for $45, and camp meetings were held there, attracting large gatherings for worship and revival.
Formation of the Church: Between 1849 and 1851, five acres were donated by Wilson Spruill, and a log cabin was constructed, serving as the first permanent church building. This structure also functioned as a community school. The first pastor, Rev. D. Pettus Boyd, served the congregation during its early years.
Growth and Development: In 1875, the Board of Trustees purchased land for a new church building. The congregation continued to grow, with significant developments in the 20th century, including the construction of the current brick structure in 1920 and the establishment of various ministries.
