Pine House
The Pine House is a historic landmark and event venue located in Trenton, South Carolina. With roots tracing back to the mid-18th century, it stands as one of the oldest and most storied properties in Edgefield County.
Historical Overview
- Origins: The site was originally known as the Piney Woods House, with a 1757 land grant to Richard Pace referencing an existing structure. In 1786, Van Swearingen acquired the property and operated it as a tavern. Notably, President George Washington dined there on May 21, 1791, during his Southern tour.
- Wever Mansion: In 1847, General J.R. Wever constructed a Greek Revival-style mansion across from the tavern. This residence was later purchased by Benjamin Warren Bettis in 1858 and renamed the Pine House.
- Restoration: After suffering partial fire damage in 1868, the house was rebuilt. In 1933, Julius M. Vann Sr. acquired the property, and it remained in his family for over 88 years. In 2021, Bart and Lisa Hankal purchased and meticulously restored the Pine House, officially opening it as an event venue in 2022. Today, the Pine House serves as a premier venue for weddings and special events. The property boasts:
- A grand façade with six towering columns and a herringbone brick aisle leading to the entrance.
- Elegant interiors featuring heart pine floors, a sweeping staircase, and ornate chandeliers.
The Little Pine House, a separate structure designed for groomsmen, includes a game room, kitchen, and the Washington Room, adorned with patriotic décor honoring George Washington’s visit.
