Philomathean Literary Society Hall
Philomathean Literary Society Hall is a remarkable blend of classical architecture, interior artistry, and centuries of academic tradition. Its elegant exterior and jewel-like hall continue to embody Erskine College’s enduring legacy in liberal arts education and rhetorical training.
It was built in 1859, designed by architect Thomas Veal in the Italian Renaissance Revival style. It is the oldest building on the Erskine campus and a contributing property in the Erskine College–Due West Historic District (NRHP-listed, 1982).
The Philomathean Literary Society, founded 1842, is an all-male campus society. The Hall has been its official home since construction. Historically, Philo Hall was the site of debates, declamations, literary exercises, and rich social events, particularly in the 1850s onward. The Society chartered in 1852 and has remained active, preserving traditions like the J.J. Darlington Cup debates.
