Pelzer Presbyterian Church
Pelzer Presbyterian Church, located at 13 Lebby Street in Pelzer, South Carolina, is a historic church established on October 29, 1883, as a commission of the South Carolina Presbytery with Rev. Calvin L. Stewart serving as the first minister. The existing sanctuary was erected in 1896 through the investment of Captain Ellison Adger Smyth, president of the Pelzer Company, and one of the first settlers of Pelzer. In 1905, a rear addition was built to accommodate church school classes. The building features eleven stained glass windows donated by Captain Smyth, who also donated the organ, one of two functioning Jardine pipe organs in existence.
In 2020, the church underwent significant restoration to preserve its historic character. The renovations addressed structural issues, interior repairs, and the installation of period-appropriate furnishings. This effort aimed to restore the church to its former glory, honoring Pelzer’s heritage and providing a space for community events.
Today, the former Pelzer Presbyterian Church operates as the Lebby Street Wedding Chapel and Events center, hosting weddings and special events. The facility offers dining areas, bridal suites, and has preserved the original pipe organ. The outdoor grounds have also been restored to accommodate various gatherings.
The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 13, 1993, recognizing its architectural and historical significance.
