Old Madison Church
The Old Madison Church in Oconee County, South Carolina, is a historic site with deep roots in the community. Established in 1883, the church was originally constructed as a modest, unpainted board building. By the turn of the century, the congregation decided to build a new church, repurposing materials from the original structure. This new building featured a distinctive climbing steeple that became a local landmark. The church was a host for the Beaverdam Association’s meetings starting in 1889 .
The church is situated on a wooded site and is flanked by a cemetery containing carved stone markers of both Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers. The earliest grave dates from 1776. This cemetery reflects the church’s long-standing presence and its role in the community’s history. The church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 1973 .
For those interested in visiting, the church is located near the intersection of Highways 123 and 76 in Westminster. Traveling west on Highway 123 for approximately 10.2 miles will bring you to the church, which is situated on the right side of the highway .
