New Hope United Methodist Church in Pomaria
New Hope United Methodist Church, nestled in the serene countryside of Pomaria, South Carolina, stands as one of the oldest Methodist congregations in central South Carolina. Founded in 1795 by Reverend Nathan Boyd, the church’s origins trace back to gatherings held beneath a brush arbor near a spring, symbolizing the community’s deep-rooted faith and resilience.
The church’s first structure was a log cabin located approximately two miles from its current site. In 1831, a frame church was erected on the present location, marking a significant development in the congregation’s history. In 1835, New Hope merged with the nearby Salem Church, combining their congregations and enhancing their collective spiritual strength.
The current sanctuary, built in 1901, reflects the architectural styles of the early 20th century. Over the years, the church has undergone several modifications to accommodate the growing needs of its congregation. Notable additions include the construction of an educational building in 1965, the installation of air conditioning in 1967, and the addition of aluminum siding in 1984. Despite challenges such as tornadoes in 1984 and 1990 that damaged the steeple, the church has remained a steadfast symbol of faith and community.
Today, New Hope United Methodist Church continues to serve as a center for worship, spiritual growth, and fellowship. Its rich history and enduring presence underscore its significant role in the Pomaria community, embodying the enduring spirit and commitment of its members to live out the teachings of Christ.
