Minter–Milam House

The Minter–Milam House, located at 915 S. Harper Street in Laurens, is a striking testament to the city’s architectural evolution in the early 20th century. Built in 1901, this residence occupies a special place within the esteemed South Harper Street Historic District, where homes from the 19th and early 20th centuries blend into a cohesive streetscape.

At first glance, the Minter–Milam House displays a graceful vernacular style, incorporating Colonial Revival symmetry with touches of Queen Anne charm. Its two-story frame, gently sloping roof, and full-width porch—likely supported by classical columns—create an inviting and well-proportioned front façade. Though less ornate than its grand Neo-Classical neighbors, this house radiates a cultivated modesty true to Laurens’s middle-class aspirations of the time.

Beyond its architectural form, the home traces the identities of two prominent families. Originally constructed for the Minter family—known regionally for their role in prefabricated homes—it later passed into the hands of the Milams around 1920, a family deeply woven into local lineage and public service. Charles L. Milam, in particular, represented Laurens County in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1937 to 1956, lending the house civic resonance.

Set amid mature shade trees, terraced lawns, and distinctive retaining walls, the Minter–Milam House embodies the harmonious charm of its neighborhood. Its unassuming elegance—rooted in regional craftsmanship and generational legacy—adds depth to the district’s narrative of growth and refinement.

Although privately owned and not open for public tours, the house remains a cherished piece of Laurens’s heritage. It stands as a subtle yet powerful reflection of a community’s rise: practical, genteel architecture quietly echoing the ambitions and values of those who called Laurens home over a century ago.
