Mary H. Wright Elementary School, serving grades K–5 with around 550 students, stands as a dynamic and nurturing presence in Spartanburg. The school transitioned from its historic Caulder Avenue building to the present facility on South Church Street just within the past decade. This modern campus includes not only classrooms, but also a library media center, gymnasium, cafeteria, and dedicated performing arts spaces for band, orchestra, and chorus. Every student from kindergarten through fifth grade is empowered with their own district-issued device—truly bringing 21st-century learning to life.

Named with reverence for Mary Honor Farrow Wright, the school’s legacy reaches deep into local history. Born into slavery in 1862, she rose to become a cornerstone of education and civic leadership, teaching for over 60 years and founding Spartanburg’s second school for Black students, which later became Carrier Street School before being renamed in her honor. Her lifelong dedication continues to inspire generations.

The school remains firmly rooted in community engagement, hosting events such as Walk to School Day, College Day, Grandparents’ Day, Relay for Life, and Veterans’ Day programs. Looking ahead, exciting plans are underway. A newly approved referendum will fund a dedicated early-childhood wing at Mary H. Wright Elementary—designed to support childcare services for district staff and bolster the public 3K (preschool) program.
