Markley Hardware Store
The Markley Hardware Store, located at 631 South Main Street in Greenville’s historic West End, is a significant example of early 20th-century commercial architecture. Constructed between 1902 and 1908, this two-story brick building replaced the smaller hardware store and offices of the Greenville Coach Company. It served as a retail hardware store for the Markley Carriage Factory, reflecting the industrial growth of the area during that period.
Architecturally, the building features a pressed brick façade with decorative banding, glazed diamond-shaped tiles, a denticulated cornice, and a stepped parapet. The rear of the building exposes a basement level, and the windows are of the 6-over-6 sash type. In the 1990s, the building underwent renovations for office use, during which the storefronts were altered.
The Markley Hardware Store is a contributing property within the West End Commercial Historic District, a nationally recognized area encompassing 15 historic structures that reflect Greenville’s commercial development from the late 19th to early 20th centuries.
Today, the building continues to serve the community, housing modern offices while preserving its historical significance. It stands as a testament to Greenville’s commitment to honoring and revitalizing its architectural heritage.
