Major Henry A. Meetze house ca 1855

Constructed around 1855, the Major Henry A. Meetze House is one of Lexington County’s finest surviving antebellum residences and an exceptional example of the early adaptation of the Italianate style in rural South Carolina. Built by Henry Adam Meetze (1820–1904), a prominent attorney, businessman, Confederate officer, and influential public official, the residence reflects both the architectural sophistication and growing prosperity of Lexington during the mid-nineteenth century. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the house is recognized for its architectural significance and its close association with one of the county’s most distinguished civic leaders.

The two-story clapboard residence is organized around a rectangular central block flanked by one-story side wings and a rear ell, creating a balanced and symmetrical composition. Covered by a low-pitched hipped roof with broad bracketed eaves, the dwelling displays many of the hallmarks of the Italianate style while retaining elements of the earlier South Carolina farmhouse tradition. A graceful two-story central portico, complemented by a one-story porch and adorned with decorative cast-iron ornamentation, dominates the principal façade. Additional architectural features include projecting bay windows, substantial brick chimneys, finely detailed plaster ceiling medallions, and an elegant curving cantilevered staircase that demonstrates the craftsmanship and refinement uncommon in Lexington County during the 1850s. The property also retains its historic wellhouse and several early outbuildings, further illustrating the character of a prosperous nineteenth-century estate.

Henry Adam Meetze was one of Lexington County’s most influential nineteenth-century citizens. A successful attorney and businessman, he served as Commissioner in Equity, magistrate, Commissioner of Public Buildings, and Commissioner of Free Schools before representing Lexington County in both the South Carolina House of Representatives and Senate, where he served as President Pro Tempore from 1890 to 1892. During the Civil War, Meetze volunteered for Confederate service, first with Gregg’s Regiment and later as quartermaster of the Thirteenth South Carolina Regiment before poor health forced his resignation. He subsequently served as tax collector for the Lexington Judicial District under the Confederate government. Following the war, Meetze resumed his legal practice and remained a leading figure in Lexington’s political, civic, and business affairs until his death in 1904.

Architecturally, the Major Henry A. Meetze House is believed to be the oldest surviving private residence in Lexington County to exhibit Italianate detailing, making it a landmark in the county’s architectural evolution. Its combination of picturesque Italianate features with traditional vernacular forms reflects the transition from the restrained domestic architecture of the antebellum period to the more ornamental styles that gained popularity throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century. Remarkably well preserved, the residence remains one of Lexington’s premier historic homes and continues to illustrate the craftsmanship, prosperity, and civic leadership that characterized the community during one of its most significant periods of development.
