Lott’s Tavern & Post Office
Lott’s Tavern & Post Office was a significant historical site located in Johnston, South Carolina, in Edgefield County. Established around 1770, it began as a one-room log house built by Emsley Lott. Over time, the structure was expanded into a tavern serving travelers along the Columbia Road. In 1839, Lott’s son, John, added a front room to the tavern and became the first postmaster, establishing the first post office in what is now Johnston. The building stood until it was demolished in 1918.
The historical marker commemorating Lott’s Tavern & Post Office is located at the intersection of Calhoun Street (SC Highway 23) and Monument Drive in Johnston, SC. The marker was installed in 2001 by the Ridge Heritage Association.
