Little Mountain Presbyterian Church
Little Mountain Presbyterian Church is a historic congregation located at 3836 Highway 28 North, Abbeville, South Carolina 29620. Established in 1789, it is one of the oldest Presbyterian churches in the region. The church was originally situated on a hill approximately a quarter mile east of its current location, in an area referred to as “God’s Mountain” and later “Little Mountain”. The first church building was a log structure, and a cemetery from that early period remains on the hillside. Around 1806, the congregation moved to a second log church at the present site. In 1811, the church joined the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, affiliating with the conservative “Old School” faction. A wood-framed church built in 1859 was incorporated into a larger T-shaped structure completed in 1920. The current building was constructed in 1980.
The church’s long history reflects the development of Presbyterianism in the Abbeville area and its adaptation over time. The cemetery on the original site serves as a testament to the early settlers and their contributions to the community. The evolution of the church’s buildings mirrors the growth and changes in the congregation and its surroundings.
