Kennedy Street School
The Kennedy Street School, located at 816 Kennedy Street in Anderson, South Carolina, is a notable example of early 20th-century educational architecture. Constructed in 1913, the building showcases the Commercial Style with Classical Revival elements, reflecting the architectural trends of that era. The original structure featured a symmetrical five-part plan, with the central three bays dating to 1913 and flanking wings added between 1938 and 1948. The school’s exterior is distinguished by its high-quality brickwork laid in Flemish bond with flashed headers, and decorative panels composed of header and sailor courses.
In 1960, a detached auditorium was added to the property, designed by architect John Linley. This auditorium is an excellent example of Modernist architecture, featuring a combination of red brick and polished concrete block, and a distinctive covered porch supported by slender steel columns.
The Kennedy Street School was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on October 24, 2007, recognizing its architectural significance and contribution to the educational history of Anderson County.
