The James Hunter House is a historic residence located at 140 South Mechanic Street in Pendleton, South Carolina. Constructed around 1860, this 2½-story frame house exemplifies the Greek Revival architectural style, featuring a gable roof, pedimented gable ends with small 6/6 light windows, and a two-tiered pedimented portico with square posts. The façade includes a symmetrical bay arrangement with double doors, multi-paned transom, and sidelights on the first floor, and identical windows on the second floor. The side elevations have 9/9 light windows on the second story and 6/6 light windows on the first story. Interior brick chimneys and a rear addition are also notable features. The house is identical in design to the brick Sitton House across the street. ​

James Hunter, the original owner, was a prominent figure in Pendleton, serving as the town’s mayor and operating Hunter’s Store. The property is part of the Pendleton Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The district encompasses 111 contributing properties, most built between 1880 and 1940, and includes a variety of architectural styles such as Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman. The district is characterized by its large trees, well-kept yards, and granite retaining walls. ​
