Howser House

The Howser House is a historic stone residence located within the Kings Mountain National Military Park in Cherokee County, South Carolina. Built in 1803 by Henry Howser, a stonemason and Revolutionary War veteran from Pennsylvania, the house is one of the few surviving examples of early 19th-century stone architecture in the region.

The Howser House features a Pennsylvania German-style design, characterized by its coursed ashlar stonework, a “kuche and stube” floor plan (with a large kitchen and a parlor), and a distinctive lintel inscription above the front door reading:

“Henry Howser – Stone Mason / Jane Howser 1803”

This inscription commemorates the completion of the house and the involvement of both Henry and his wife, Christina Jane Howser, in its construction. The house’s design and craftsmanship reflect Howser’s expertise and the influence of his Pennsylvania roots.

After Henry Howser’s death in 1822, the property remained in the Howser family for several generations. It was eventually sold in 1918 and later acquired by the National Park Service in 1938, becoming part of the Kings Mountain National Military Park. The house underwent restoration in the 1970s, preserving its architectural integrity and historical value.

The Howser House is located within the Kings Mountain National Military Park, which commemorates the pivotal Battle of Kings Mountain fought on October 7, 1780. The house is situated in a remote area of the park and is typically open to the public only once or twice a year, often during special events or guided tours. Visitors can explore the house and its surroundings to gain insight into early 19th-century life and architecture.
