Halcyon Grove

Halcyon Grove is a historic property located at 406 Buncombe Street in Edgefield, South Carolina. Built around 1817, it was originally constructed by Daniel Bird, a planter who married Behethland Brooks Simkins, the widow of Jesse Simkins. In 1829, Bird sold the property to Francis Wilkinson Pickens, who later served as the 60th Governor of South Carolina from 1860 to 1862. Pickens deeded the house to his father, Andrew Pickens Jr., a veteran of the War of 1812 and former governor of South Carolina, who resided there until his death in 1838. The property was subsequently sold to John Lipscomb, a merchant and planter, in 1836. The Lipscomb family owned the property until 1869, after which it passed through several hands, including the Bates and Feltham families, who maintained ownership for nearly 140 years until 2008 .

Architecturally, Halcyon Grove is a Federal-style house with a later Classical Revival porch. Notable features include 21-pane fanlights above the doors and 13-pane sidelights, which provide access to expansive upper and lower halls. The interior boasts hand-carved Canadian pine woodwork with fluted arches and rope designs, as well as frescoes in rose patterns and ceiling medallions, reflecting the craftsmanship of the era .

Halcyon Grove is part of the Edgefield Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The district encompasses over 40 19th-century buildings, including several house museums, and showcases architectural styles such as Greek Revival, Federal, and Victorian .

While Halcyon Grove is a private residence and not open to the public, it stands as a testament to Edgefield’s rich history and architectural heritage.
