Grace United Methodist Church
Grace United Methodist Church located at 201 South Church Street, Union, Union County, SC. Local Methodist members initiated the construction of a new stone church building in 1871, largely through community support and donated materials. It was completed in 1872–1873. Services were held as early as 1872, although final completion came in 1873. Under architects Casey & Fant (1917-1919), a significant expansion and renovation took place, altering the tower and adding new seating areas, classrooms, and fellowship spaces.
The two-story educational building adjacent to the church was further enlarged circa 1955. Grace United Methodist Church is constructed of solid stone in a modified Gothic Revival style notable for steep gabled roofs, buttressed nave walls, and stained glass windows. The original symmetrical entrance tower was replaced during the 1917–1919 renovations with a taller belfry tower and expanded sanctuary space.
The church has served as a long-standing center of Methodist worship and community life in Union since the early Reconstruction era. Architectural Heritage: Its stone construction and evolved architectural form represent 19th- and early 20th-century church design in small Southern cities.
