Geer-Thompson Building
The Geer-Thompson Building, located at 631 South Main Street in Greenville’s historic West End, is a significant example of early 20th-century commercial architecture. Constructed in 1910, the three-story brick structure was designed in the Chicago Commercial Style by architect Joseph T. Lawrence, a notable figure in Greenville’s architectural history. The building features a flat roof with parapet walls, large segmental-arched windows, and a steel-and-wood beam interior system, providing approximately 4,000 square feet per floor.
Historically, the building housed the Geer Drug Company, founded by Dr. B.E. Geer, and later became home to W.M. Thompson’s Ford dealership, the first Model T Ford agency in the Upstate region. These associations underscore the building’s role in Greenville’s early commercial and automotive development.
In the 1950s, a modern metal façade was added, which obscured its original architectural details. However, a restoration in the late 1990s, led by the Harper family and Marshall Clarke Architects, removed the false front, restoring the building’s historic appearance. This restoration contributed to the building’s inclusion in the West End Commercial Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, with a boundary increase in 1998.
