Evergreen Plantation House

The Evergreen Plantation House is a two-story, timber-framed residence constructed ca. mid–nineteenth century and situated on a gently elevated site characteristic of rural agrarian development in southern Anderson County. Exhibiting vernacular interpretations of Greek Revival domestic architecture, the house retains a high degree of integrity in its original massing, structural form, and material composition.

The dwelling is rectangular in plan, resting on a foundation of granite piers that were later partially infilled with brick during early twentieth-century stabilization efforts. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal weatherboard siding secured with cut and wire nails, reflecting both original nineteenth-century craftsmanship and later maintenance periods. A side-gabled roof of moderate pitch covers the primary structure; the present metal roofing replaces earlier wood shingles but follows the original roofline. Twin exterior brick chimneys rise from the gable ends, executed in common bond with simple corbelled caps, and serve multi-room fireplace systems.

The principal (south-facing) façade is organized symmetrically in a three-bay configuration. A central entry, framed by square pilasters and a plain entablature, displays an original four-panel wooden door flanked by narrow sidelights and capped by a rectangular transom. Fenestration consists of evenly spaced, double-hung sash windows—predominantly six-over-six—with original surrounds, molded aprons, and early glass panes exhibiting characteristic waviness. First-story windows maintain full-height proportions consistent with the Greek Revival influence. The second story reflects similar fenestration patterns, slightly reduced in height but maintaining visual alignment.

The interior follows a modified central-hall plan, with principal rooms positioned on either side of a longitudinal hallway on both floors. Structural framing is of heavy timber, with hewn sills and joists connected through mortise-and-tenon joinery. Heart-pine flooring remains in a largely unaltered state throughout the house. Original plaster walls rest on wooden lath, with surviving early decorative treatments including molded baseboards, symmetrical door and window surrounds, plaster ceiling medallions in principal rooms, and simple but finely carved Greek Revival mantels.

A rear ell, added in the late nineteenth century, extends from the northwest corner of the main block and originally housed service functions. This one-story wing is clad in matching weatherboard and features a shed-roofed porch supported by chamfered posts. Portions of the porch were enclosed during early twentieth-century modernization campaigns to accommodate kitchen upgrades and mechanical utilities.

Historic outbuildings associated with Evergreen Plantation—including remnants of a smokehouse foundation, a collapsed barn frame, and surface archaeological scatters—illustrate the property’s long agricultural use. Although some structures have deteriorated, their spatial arrangement reflects the plantation’s original operational layout and contributes to its historic landscape integrity.
