Erskine Building
The Erskine Building is an architectural and cultural icon in Due West—its twin towers, observatory dome, and historic brickwork tell a story of educational aspiration, resilience, and enduring heritage since its 1892 rebuild.
Built in 1892 it replaced an earlier 1842 structure. A three-story brick structure featuring a central pavilion with an observatory tower, twin towers (one with a dome), rounded-arch windows, and richly ornamented brickwork. The west tower includes a domed observatory; the east tower houses a clock—both set within elaborate brick detailing.
The building served as the main academic hall and auditorium, hosting lectures, ceremonies, and public gatherings. It symbolizes the college’s resilience after fire damage and its growth during the post-Civil War era. It continues to function as a symbolic and functional campus hub.
