Earle St Baptist Church
Nestled in the heart of Greenville’s Colonel Elias Earle Historic District, Earle Street Baptist Church stands as both a timeless architectural landmark and a vibrant spiritual community. Founded in March 1922, Earle Street Baptist emerged from the vision of Central Baptist’s pastor J.A. Brown and the hospitality of J.C. Keys, whose home hosted the founding meetings. The congregation first worshiped in a loaned revival tent, then moved into its permanent sanctuary in November 1923—a chapel still in regular use today, linking current worshippers to nearly a century of tradition. Prominent past pastors include Ellis Fuller and Nathan Brooks, who went on to lead major Baptist educational institutions and mission boards.
In March 2022, the church celebrated its 100th anniversary, with Senior Pastor Stephen Clyborne preaching from the same biblical passage delivered at its founding, and descendants of the first pastor in attendance. This centennial year featured a series of commemorative worship services, banquets, and partnerships with daughter and sister churches celebrated across the community.
As the congregation expanded, the church constructed a 14,000 sq ft, three-story addition adjacent to the original sanctuary:
-
- The ground floor features a preschool wing with classrooms and a modern check‑in area.
- Middle levels include a friendly welcome center, church offices, and meeting spaces.
- The top floor houses additional classrooms and a historic timeline exhibit chronicling the church’s journey.
The project also added a garden, new parking lot, and carefully landscaped campus that blends old and new seamlessly.
Still active today, the congregation worships in the historic sanctuary while remaining deeply engaged in local, national, and global mission partnerships. ESBC considers itself as strong outside its walls as within them. Led by Pastor Clyborne since 2009 (though currently under interim leadership), the church upholds a legacy of continuity and a forward-looking vision for growth and outreach.
Earle Street Baptist Church is not only a historic Greenville institution—it is an evolving family grounded in tradition, built on community, and committed to mission. With a century of faithfulness behind it and a spirit of renewal before it, ESBC remains a beloved spiritual home for all ages and walks of life.
