Davenport Building
The Davenport Building in downtown Greer, South Carolina, is a notable historic structure located at 230 Trade Street, at the corner of Trade and Randall Streets. This building is part of the Greer Downtown Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The district encompasses 40 contributing buildings constructed from circa 1900 to circa 1940, with the majority built between 1910 and 1930 in Greer’s central business district.
Constructed around 1898, the Davenport Building originally housed a general merchandise store established by David (D.D.) Davenport circa 1880. Over the years, the building has served various purposes, including hosting Chautauqua meetings and opera singers in the Davenport Hall above the store during the 1890s. In the 20th century, it transitioned through several uses, such as a ladies’ clothing store, department store, furniture store, and staffing company.
In the early 2000s, the building was purchased by Scott and Lindsay Stevens, who transformed it into The Davenport, a historic event venue. Since then, it has hosted numerous weddings, receptions, and community events, maintaining its historical charm while serving modern purposes.
