Duncan’s Creek Presbyterian Church
Duncan’s Creek Presbyterian Church, also known as the Old Rock Church, is a historic landmark located near Clinton in Laurens County, South Carolina. Established in 1764 by Scotch-Irish settlers, it holds the distinction of being the oldest church in Laurens County . Founding: The congregation was organized in 1764 by Joseph Adair, Thomas Erving, William Hanna, and Andrew McCrory .
- Current Structure: The existing stone building was constructed in 1842 and is a simple rectangular structure made of irregular stones, exemplifying mid-19th-century rural church architecture .
- Architectural Features: The church features a gable-end main entrance with double doors flanked by two narrow windows. Its unadorned simplicity and solid stone construction are characteristic of buildings erected by early Scotch-Irish settlers in the Southeast .
- National Register of Historic Places: Duncan’s Creek Presbyterian Church was added to the National Register on November 15, 1973
- Adjacent to the church is a cemetery containing carved stone markers of both Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers. The earliest grave dates from 1776 . Sixteen soldiers of the American Revolution are buried here, including Joseph Adair Sr., James Adair Sr., and Robert Hanna .
