Counts–Feagle House in Little Mountain

The Counts–Feagle House in Little Mountain is a refined example of late-19th-century domestic architecture that captures the confident spirit of a growing railroad-era town. Built circa 1890, the house is traditionally associated with the Counts and Feagle families, both prominent in the community’s early development. Its well-proportioned form, elegant detailing, and commanding siting make it one of Little Mountain’s most notable surviving residences from that period of prosperity.

Architecturally, the Counts–Feagle House reflects a transitional blend of Victorian and Classical Revival influences. The dwelling’s symmetrical façade is enriched with tall sash windows, decorative gable ornaments, and a broad, inviting front porch supported by turned or tapered posts—hallmarks of a design that balanced grace with small-town practicality. Inside, high ceilings, paneled doors, and period woodwork evoke the craftsmanship and pride of place characteristic of the era.

Set amid mature trees along a quiet street, the house conveys a sense of continuity in Little Mountain’s historic landscape. Its preservation allows a glimpse into the domestic ideals of the town’s prosperous late-19th- and early-20th-century families, when craftsmanship, proportion, and ornament were means of expressing both comfort and civic standing. Today, the Counts–Feagle House endures not merely as a private home, but as an architectural touchstone—an enduring link to Little Mountain’s formative years and the genteel traditions that helped shape its enduring character.
