Christ Church Episcopal
Christ Church Episcopal, located at 10 North Church Street in Greenville, South Carolina, is the city’s oldest organized religious body and its oldest surviving church building. Founded in 1820 as St. James Mission by Reverend Rodolphus Dickerson, the congregation initially worshiped in the local courthouse until 1826, when a brick church was constructed on land donated by Vardry McBee, a prominent local industrialist.
The current Gothic Revival structure was designed by Reverend John D. McCullough and constructed between 1852 and 1854. Notable architectural features include:
- A cruciform layout with a 104.67-foot bell tower.
- Brick construction with stone and stucco trim.
- Stained glass windows, including a 1914 depiction of the Last Supper by Mayer Studios of Munich.
- Additions over the years, such as a balcony (1875), south transept (1880), and north transept (1968).
The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
The churchyard serves as the final resting place for several notable individuals, including:
- Vardry McBee, known as the “Father of Greenville.”
- Benjamin Franklin Perry, provisional Governor of South Carolina after the Civil War.
- William H. Perry, U.S. Congressman.
