Charles H. Duckett House
The Charles H. Duckett House, located at 105 Downs Street in Laurens, South Carolina, is a significant historic residence built around 1892 by Charles H. “Charlie” Duckett (1860–1947), a prominent African American entrepreneur. Duckett was a skilled carpenter, contractor, and businessman who owned Laurens’ only lumberyard for many years and also operated a funeral home. He was actively involved in civic affairs and was a member of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
The house is a one-story, L-shaped frame structure built in the Folk Victorian style. It features a low-pitched, standing seam metal hip roof, beaded weatherboard siding, and decorative elements such as sawn and perforated porch details, paneled ceilings, ornate mantels, wainscoting, and carved door and window surrounds. The main entrance showcases an Eastlake-style door. The interior includes a central hall with five rooms on the main floor, while the kitchen and dining room are located in the stuccoed brick basement. Notably, the dining room contains a built-in china cabinet, a Greek Revival-style mantel, and a paneled ceiling.
Situated in a neighborhood historically associated with Laurens’ African American community, the Duckett House remained in the Duckett family until 1975. In 1986, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places due to its architectural significance and its association with Charles H. Duckett’s contributions to commerce and African American history in the region.
Today, the house is owned by the Laurens County African American Cultural Foundation and serves as a museum and community action center, preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the area.
