Cannon Building
The Cannon Building is a historic landmark located at 100 North Main Street in Fountain Inn, South Carolina. Constructed around 1880, it stands as one of the oldest surviving structures in the town and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 28, 2005.
The building is closely associated with James Alvin Cannon (1853–1928), a pivotal figure in Fountain Inn’s early development. Cannon likely commissioned the structure to support his expanding business ventures and to house the town’s post office. Throughout its history, the Cannon Building has served multiple roles, including:
- Cannon Store
- Cannon Funeral Home
- Peoples Bank of Fountain Inn
- Fountain Inn Tribune
- Town Post Office
This versatility underscores its central role in the commercial and civic life of Fountain Inn.
Architecturally, the Cannon Building is a two-story brick structure encompassing approximately 6,000 square feet, evenly divided between its two levels. It exemplifies Late Victorian commercial design, featuring classical ornamentation and a prominent corner location. While the storefront has undergone some modifications to align with modern retail trends, these changes have been minimal and have not compromised the building’s structural or architectural integrity.
