Blackstock Battlefield
The Blackstock Battlefield, also known as Blackstock’s Plantation, is a significant Revolutionary War site located near Cross Anchor in Union County, South Carolina. On November 20, 1780, Patriot Brigadier General Thomas Sumter led militia forces to a pivotal victory over British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton’s troops. This engagement marked the first time American militia defeated British regulars during the war, bolstering Patriot morale in the Southern campaign.
Visiting the Battlefield
Today, the site is preserved as part of the Battle of Musgrove Mill State Historic Site and remains largely undeveloped, offering visitors a glimpse into its historical landscape

Trails and Hiking
Visitors can explore the battlefield via a 1.3-mile loop trail, part of the Palmetto Trail’s Blackstock Battlefield Passage. This moderately difficult trail descends to the Tyger River, follows it for about half a mile, and then ascends to Monument Hill, offering views of the battlefield and surrounding areas.
Ranger-Guided Hikes
For a more in-depth experience, ranger-guided hikes are available for groups of 10 or more. These two-hour hikes cover approximately 2 miles of moderately difficult terrain and delve into the history of the battle and its significance. The cost is $10 per participant, and reservations can be made by contacting the Battle of Musgrove Mill State Historic Site.
