Berry Shoals Dam & Bridge
The Berry Shoals Dam Bridge is a historic structure located near Duncan, South Carolina, spanning the South Tyger River. Constructed around 1900, the dam and its accompanying bridge were built to power the Tucapau Mill, which was situated several miles away. This was one of the early instances of using hydroelectric power to supply electricity to a mill through a transmission line.
The bridge itself is an abandoned truss bridge that once served as a road crossing over the dam. It is now derelict, with its steel frame partially submerged in the river, creating a striking visual juxtaposition against the natural surroundings.
Today, the area is owned by the Startex-Jackson-Wellford-Duncan Water District. The bridge and dam are accessible to the public for exploration, offering a glimpse into the region’s industrial past.
