Bank of Mount Carmel
The Bank of Mount Carmel, constructed around 1905, stands as a significant historical structure within the Mount Carmel Historic District in McCormick County, South Carolina. This one-story brick building exemplifies early 20th-century commercial architecture, featuring a metal cornice with modillion blocks and recessed brickwork on the facade that simulates rusticated stone masonry. The building originally showcased a large arched window and a single door; however, these openings have since been filled with cinderblock.
The bank played a central role in Mount Carmel’s economy during its period of prosperity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Established in the 1880s, it provided essential financial services to the community. Today, the building is recognized as a contributing property to the Mount Carmel Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
While the building no longer functions as a bank, it remains a testament to Mount Carmel’s rich history. Visitors interested in exploring the town’s heritage can view the Bank of Mount Carmel from public areas, appreciating its architectural significance and the role it played in the community’s development.
