Balwearie Plantation
Balwearie Plantation is a historic estate located west of Winnsboro in Fairfield County, South Carolina, along South Carolina Highway 34. Constructed around 1822, the residence is a one-and-a-half-story structure combining brick and frame construction. The first story is built of brick, while the upper half-story is sheathed in weatherboard. The house features a gabled roof and a cross-gabled front porch supported by six paneled wooden posts. Architectural details include boxed cornices with returns and central, paired, louvered windows with plain surrounds. Two interior chimneys pierce the roof ridge. In 1975, a rear porch was converted into a kitchen.
The name “Balwearie” reflects the Douglass family’s Scottish heritage, named after their ancestral home, Balwearie Castle in Scotland.
Balwearie was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 6, 1984, under reference number 84000593.
