Bailes-Collins Department Stone
The Bailes-Collins Department Store was a prominent retail establishment in downtown Greer, South Carolina, with a rich history dating back to the early 20th century.
- Founding: The store was established in 1928 by George Bailes and Roy E. Collins. Around 1938, Roy Collins became the sole proprietor. The business remained a family-run operation, with three generations contributing to its management and operations.
- Location: The store was situated on Trade Street, the main commercial artery of Greer. The building has been listed under various addresses over time, including 106, 206, 208, and 210 Trade Street.
- Community Role: In 1995, Roy Collins generously donated the use of the Bailes-Collins building to the Greer Heritage Museum for one year, with the option of renewal at a low rent. The building was renovated to accommodate museum exhibits and served as the museum’s home until 2009, when the museum relocated to the former city hall
- Historic Recognition: The Bailes-Collins Department Store is recognized as a contributing building within the Greer Downtown Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
