American Bank Building
The American Bank Building, located at 701 South Main Street in Greenville, South Carolina, is a historic structure situated in the city’s West End Historic District. Constructed around 1890, it originally served as the American Bank and is notable for its Neo-Classical Revival architecture. The building features a two-story, trapezoidal shape with a terra cotta façade, a heavy cornice with modillions, a high parapet, pilasters with capitals, and three segmental-arched windows on the second floor.
Today, the building houses South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS), a nonprofit organization that provides free civil legal assistance to low-income residents across the state.
The American Bank Building is part of the West End Commercial Historic District, which encompasses 15 contributing buildings dating from the 1880s to the early 1920s. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, with a boundary increase in 1998.
