Cedar Springs ARP Church

Located in the rural landscape of Abbeville County, Cedar Springs ARP Church is one of the oldest congregations of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in the South Carolina upcountry. The congregation traces its origins to the late eighteenth century, when Scotch-Irish settlers began establishing farms and communities throughout the region and brought with them a strong Presbyterian faith and tradition of worship.

The church was formally organized in the 1780s and quickly became an important center of religious life for families living in the surrounding countryside. Early services were often held in simple structures or meeting houses, where traveling ministers preached to scattered congregations across the frontier. As the community grew and became more established, the congregation constructed permanent buildings that reflected the stability and devotion of its members.

During the nineteenth century, Cedar Springs ARP Church played a significant role not only in spiritual life but also in education and community organization. One of its most notable contributions was the establishment of the Erskine College and its associated theological school in nearby Due West. Founded in 1839 by leaders of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, the institution grew into one of the most important centers of higher education in the region, closely tied to the Cedar Springs congregation and its ministers.

Like many churches in the South, the members of Cedar Springs ARP Church experienced the upheaval of the American Civil War and the social changes that followed. Despite these challenges, the church remained a strong and enduring presence for generations of local families, continuing its traditions of worship, fellowship, and community service.
