Possum Trot School

The building known as Possum Trot School was originally constructed in 1880, on farmland in the Midway community just outside Gaffney. It is a one‑room schoolhouse — and importantly, one of the few remaining one‑room schools still standing in South Carolina. The school was built by brothers Jimmy Pettit and Tom Pettit with help from other Cherokee County residents. It provided education through 11th grade.

With the advent of newer, larger schools in the area, Possum Trot fell out of use and was abandoned for a time, leading to deterioration. In 1969, the schoolhouse was restored by local builder Ernest Wyatt — a gesture spearheaded by Louise Phifer Camp as a gift to her husband, Wofford Benjamin Camp, who had attended the school as a child.

Later, due to property transfer and development changes, the schoolhouse was relocated. In 1992 it was moved to a site next to a store on Peachoid Road — near what is known locally as the “Peachoid.”  Most recently, the building has been moved again: it now resides on the grounds of Cherokee County History & Arts Museum on College Drive in Gaffney, as part of efforts to preserve local heritage.

Because of this preservation, Possum Trot School has become more than a former rural schoolhouse — it stands today as a tangible link to late‑19th and early‑20th‑century education in Cherokee County. Visitors and community members can view it (especially during museum events) as a reminder of how children in the area once learned, often in modest one‑room settings.
