Tamassee DAR School

Nestled in the scenic Blue Ridge foothills of Oconee County, Tamassee DAR School stands as a lasting monument to compassion, education, and patriotic service. Founded in 1919 by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the school emerged from a vision to bring opportunity and stability to the children of the Appalachian region—many of whom lived in isolated mountain communities where education and support were scarce. Over the decades, Tamassee has grown from a humble mission school into a beacon of hope, faith, and service that continues to uplift generations.

In the early 20th century, life in the mountain valleys of South Carolina was both beautiful and challenging. Families worked the land, but poverty and remoteness often limited access to formal schooling. Recognizing this need, members of the DAR—guided by a spirit of civic duty and humanitarian purpose—sought to create a school that would nurture the minds and spirits of children “in the shadow of the mountains.” They chose the name Tamassee, a Cherokee word meaning “the place of the sunlight of God,” reflecting both the natural beauty of the region and the light of learning they hoped to kindle there.

When Tamassee DAR School opened its doors in 1919, it began with just a handful of students in simple wooden buildings overlooking the Tamassee Valley. From the beginning, the school’s mission reached beyond academics. It provided shelter, meals, and moral guidance for children in need, many of whom came from broken homes or impoverished families. Teachers and staff lived among the students, creating a close-knit community bound by care, faith, and the belief that education could transform lives.

Throughout the 20th century, the school expanded its facilities and programs, supported by DAR chapters across the nation. Dormitories, classrooms, and a chapel rose among the pines, forming a self-sufficient campus that embodied both order and warmth. Agricultural training, domestic skills, and moral education accompanied traditional studies, ensuring that students graduated with both knowledge and resilience. During the Great Depression and beyond, Tamassee stood as a refuge of stability amid hardship—a place where young people could grow into responsible, hopeful adults.

As decades passed and society evolved, so too did Tamassee’s mission. No longer just a boarding school for mountain children, it became a modern children’s home and family service organization, offering residential care, foster programs, early childhood education, and family support services. Yet through every change, its founding purpose has endured: to protect and uplift children, honoring the DAR’s century-old promise of service to “God, Home, and Country.”

Today, Tamassee DAR School remains a living testament to what faith, philanthropy, and perseverance can achieve. Its historic campus, framed by the soft blue ridges of the Appalachians, continues to welcome children who need a safe haven and a fresh start. Generations after its founding, the light of Tamassee still shines—illuminating the enduring belief that compassion and education can transform not only individual lives, but entire communities.
