W.D. Summer General Store

The W.D. Summer Store, located at the intersection of Peak Road and Hope Station Road in Pomaria, South Carolina, is a historic commercial building that reflects the economic and social dynamics of early 20th-century rural communities. Constructed around 1900, this one-story frame building served as a general store, providing essential goods and services to local residents and travelers.

Strategically situated approximately half a mile from the Hope Station depot, the store capitalized on the bustling rail traffic of the era. Placing general stores near train depots was a common practice among merchants, as it allowed them to cater to the needs of passengers and freight handlers, thereby boosting commerce in the area.

W.D. Summer, the proprietor of the store, was a prominent merchant in Newberry County. In 1935, he opened Newberry’s first liquor store, which reportedly sold $500 worth of alcohol on its opening day. This venture marked a significant moment in the county’s retail history, highlighting Summer’s entrepreneurial spirit and the evolving consumer culture of the time.

Today, the W.D. Summer Store stands as a testament to the region’s commercial heritage. While no longer in operation, the building’s preservation offers a glimpse into the past, illustrating the pivotal role such establishments played in shaping the economic landscape of rural South Carolina.
